Yoga for Guys?

Yoga for Guys?

by C. Kinsolving

Why, oh why, are there more women than men in yoga classes?

As a yoga teacher and practitioner for the last 12 years, this is a question that I confront regularly. I wanted to delve into writing about this dicey subject, but realized that I had very little from which to grasp – being a woman and all. So, I asked my male friends from all walks of life what they thought about yoga and manhood. Their responses will probably make this article a lot more entertaining for all of you, so here it goes…

First, Nick Verso discussed the differences between the sexes saying, “We love yoga except when we have to spread our legs. Women get their foreheads to the floor and I barely get my legs a meter apart and bend forward an inch. But more generally, I think guys prefer the conflict of weight lifting where they’re using their physical strength against an object. I think yoga has a reputation as being ‘gentle’ so they think it won’t deliver muscle gain or mass.”

Andrew Boyle chimed in with a helpful way to boost a yoga class into a more challenging workout. “I think building some endurance into the class is helpful and might get the guys jived. Handstands, plank, side plank, etc…” It’s true that yoga does strengthen, tone, and build muscle with one’s own weight, which has often been proven to be better for the body and is just as, if not more, challenging than a weight workout. Joseph Pilates, pictured below, started the Pilates method with this belief in mind and he certainly doesn’t look like a weakling!

Sikes Milverstein got right to the point, and then some: “1. Guys definitely prefer the “grit” of weightlifting. Feels like you’ve accomplished more. 2. Yoga is very difficult when first starting out, and can be embarrassing and cause injury. Weightlifting is easier – lift the weight, put it down, repeat. 3. There are lots of hot girls in yoga classes, and there are lots of positions in yoga that lead one to fart. If I farted in front of hot yoga girls, I would move to another city to avoid ever seeing any of them ever again. Hence, weightlifting.” Manny DacDardle also agreed with the weight-lifting theory: “Yoga just doesn’t seem as efficient as alternatives in making use of my time to achieve definitive results. I think most guys have some combo of the following goals in mind for their workout time: 1) Get fit cardiovascularly, 2) Lose weight, 3) Build muscle. … Yoga does not seem like the most time-efficient means to achieve any of those goals.”

A lot of people’s hesitance towards yoga is based solidly in myth. Often times, both men and women make assumptions about activities which push us outside of our comfort zone. I know that I certainly had my doubts about yoga before I started practicing. But part of life’s challenge is to keep an open mind and to try new things, especially if they come highly recommended. Every chiropractor, doctor, masseuse, and physical therapist that I have talked to agrees that, in the long run, yoga and Pilates are some of the best physical activities for your body. People who lift weights are more susceptible to injury, strained joints and chronic pain, while those who strengthen using the weight of their own body experience fewer pinched nerves, irritated tendons, and over-bulky muscles.

I recently happened to spend several days on a heavily male-populated film set. While we were sitting on the tailgate of my truck waiting for a shot, my male companions Kyle and Roger struck up a conversation with me about yoga. Kyle’s karate master friend often teaches Kyle a few moves and yoga poses here and there, while Roger admitted that he is curious about yoga but has not yet tried it. Kyle remarked that he would do yoga more often if it weren’t in a studio setting and if he could grab a beer with his buddies afterward. “You know: yoga in your yard or garage and then a beer. Sounds good to me.” Roger explained that his back was all messed up from lifting film equipment, so I started suggesting poses that he could do to ease the pain. Though they initially groaned and furrowed their eyebrows, Roger and Kyle allowed me to walk them through a few yoga poses which they found to be pain relieving as well as sweat inducing. Before I knew it, we were all doing yoga in the parking lot on a set; you know, just me and the guys, hangin’ out.

It’s also important to have a realistic perspective whenever you start something new: when I first started yoga, I couldn’t touch my toes because I had been a long distance runner for most of my young adult life. Guys (and women) who lift, run, or don’t work out at all will have different levels of flexibility than those who have practiced yoga before. Also, remember that women are naturally stronger in their legs and men are much stronger in their arms. Warrior poses often feel great to the ladies and really challenging to men, but then when a class flows into doing crows and headstands, men thrive.

The great thing about yoga is that you are completely aware of your progress over the course of just a few classes. I remember a man started coming to a class I taught in Connecticut several years ago. He was 80 years old and could barely bend from the hip–but he persevered. Within two months he was able to touch his toes.

Chevonne Yin wrote in, “One of my friends was surprised that my fiancé does yoga. He actually asked him, ‘Guys do that?’ I couldn’t believe it! [My fiance,] Wiel, is a yoga instructor and encourages everyone to do it. I’m interested to know why more guys don’t do yoga, too… I asked Wiel what got him into yoga. He said Tony Horton (pictured below) and P90X. He realized that yoga, improves agility, balance, and flexibility, which are all essential to good health, continued athleticism, and longevity.”

Speaking of Tony Horton, Triathlete and Iron Man, Garry B. Victory, adds: ”Yoga is beneficial for endurance athletes because it helps build and maintain flexibility, strengthening, and mental focus. Holding certain positions works on your slow twitch muscles for your legs, arms and your core.  This helps athletes to swim, run, and bike with greater strength.”

Yet yoga is also more than just a workout. Yes, if you just want a gigantic bicep, you can pick up a free weight and do a million curls. But if you’d like to improve your mental health during your workout, find some peace as you get buff and enjoy some relaxation while you flex, then give yoga a shot. In Adam Smith’s words, “I call yoga my gym, my temple and my therapist’s office all in one. It is the most integrative system I’ve found for achieving health in a holistic sense, not just physically (though that’s a compelling motivator), but psychologically and spiritually as well. I personally need a fairly intense, sweaty yoga practice to distract my mind long enough to quiet it down. That’s the beautiful ‘slight-of-hand’ that occurs in yoga: you’re busy lengthening, strengthening, and building endurance in your body. Meanwhile, your mind is being calmed and centered. I’ve never found that as effectively in other physical practices or training as I have with yoga.”

I agree: if we spend an hour or two everyday working on our bodies, shouldn’t we be spending at least the same amount of time, if not more, on our minds? With the crowded daily schedules most of us manage, we simply don’t have four hours to work out our bodies and minds separately; yoga is a two-in-one deal.

My sister concluded the male yoga survey by simply stating, “I have some guy friends that go to yoga to pick up chicks. I have not introduced these guy friends to my sister.”

INTERACTING WITH GOBBLE GREEN

How often do you visit the Gobble Green Facebook page? What do you like about it and what notes or ideas do you have for improving Gobble Green’s Facebook page?

I visit every few weeks. I like the giveaways and other product related information.  The other posts with pictures of animals and the like are not really of interest to me. I am looking for things related to Gobble Green and its business.

If you are a subscriber, please provide your notes on the Gobble Green newsletters. If you are not a subscriber, why did you decide not to sign up for the Gobble Green newsletter?

I just recently signed up for the newsletter and have not yet received one.

Please provide any comments and suggestions you may have regarding Gobble Green’s customer service via phone and email.

So far the customer service was responsive and helpful.

Please share any additional notes you may have about interacting with Gobble Green here.

MEAL DELIVERY

When your meals shipped from Gobble Green, did you automatically receive an email from FedEx with your tracking information?

I had to email Gobble Green and request tracking information, but it was sent to me.

Did your meals arrive frozen?

Yes! And I will mention that the one other time someone gifted me with Gobble Green meals they were cold, but not frozen. The packaging seemed greatly improved from that experience in 2010.

Were there labels neatly attached to each item in your package with nutritional information?

Most but not all of the items.  Also, the side dishes (broccoli for example) were not attached to the accompanying main course. That would be helpful especially in light of how much food was shipped to me.  A few of the packages were sort of bent over where the labeling was and it was frozen that way.

Would you prefer it if Gobble Green products arrived in trays as opposed to bags? Does it make a difference to you? Would you be more likely to order from Gobble Green if the meals arrived in different packaging?

The packaging is great (simple and nothing extra). I hate to see packaging be wasteful.

Please share any additional notes you may have about Gobble Green’s meal delivery here.

I was also glad to see that you added nutritional information to the labels. Very helpful. Again, I think if you could list the accompanying side (if there is one) that would be helpful.

THE FOOD

Please write one or two sentences about each product in your kit. Let us know which meals you enjoy and, if you don’t like something, tell us why.

BREAKFASTS

Vegetable Hash Browns Nice kick to these. I enjoyed it.

Banana Pumpkin Breakfast Porridge This was a huge serving and very filling.  I liked the crunchiness of the almonds and the bite that the steel cut oats gave.

Blueberry Muffin The muffins are good but dense in carbs and fat, although I suppose that is a muffin.

Maple Applesauce This was delicious, smooth and fresh, although I don’t think I would be fulfilled just having this for breakfast. Maybe serve in smaller portions as dessert?

Biscuit This was a brick. It tasted more like a pretzel than a biscuit. Not that good.

Apple Carrot Muffin The muffins are good but dense in carbs and fat, although I suppose that is a muffin.

Tempeh Bacon with Hash Brown Good old fashioned hash brown. Yum. Heated it up in the toaster.

Mushroom Scramble with “Cheese” – I had this for breakfast this morning.   I am not a vegan, and I do love real eggs, but I thought this was a great substitute.  It really tasted quite good and you couldn’t tell it had been microwaved. I did add some salt and pepper.

Breakfast Bar I had a few bites of this and thought it was far too sweet. I ended up throwing it out. Not good at all.

Chickpea Scramble This was delicious. I would have liked more mushrooms and bell pepper (I think there was only 1 piece of each in the portion) but overall a really nice dish. Loved the crunch of the corn.

LUNCHES

Tortilla Soup I really liked this soup and the flavors.

Vegetable Paella with “Chicken” This was quite good.  I like the various textures and there was a nice lemony flavor underlying the dish.

Baked Cauliflower and Broccoli Good but did not feel like a complete “meal”.

Asian Vegetable Salad I was skeptical about the frozen salads, but it held up well and was delicious.

African Medley Stew This soup is very spicy, and the sweet potato is pleasant.

Southwestern Salad This had a nice kick to it. I liked it.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Tempeh I’m not a huge fan of tempeh in general, but I really liked the brussel sprouts. Very fresh.

Ginger Thai Salad I was skeptical about the frozen salads, but it held up well and was delicious.

Signature Vegetable Soup Good but not very filling.

Pan Seared Vegetables in Creamy Tomato Sauce This was delicious, but not that filling. I would have like it to be accomanpied by some whole wheat pasta.

Lentil and Cauliflower Curry I really enjoyed this.

Texas Caviar This was fine, not memorable.

Ocean Medley Stew I really enjoyed this stew. It was thick and filling, with a really nice kick to it.

DINNERS

Macaroni and “Cheese” I really liked the garlic kick to the mac and cheese.  It was yummy.

Kung Pao “Chicken” This is one of my favorites. So fresh, really spicy. The peanuts add a great bite to the dish and the “chicken” is perfect. Loved it and could eat this often.

Fettuccine Alfredo w/ Peas and Broccoli  not bad, veggies peas are nice and crisp, broccoli is beautiful and green, but a tiny bit chewy. sauce is creamy and thick.  Pasta is kind of broken up, but still has good texture. peas are wonderful.  sauce is a little bland, needs some oomph.  pasta’s weak consistency makes it difficult to eat – you can’t twirl it up on a fork.

Sesame Tofu and Vegetables I really enjoyed this dish. It had just the right amount of sweetness.

Cashew Pesto Pasta This was delicious.  Really comfort food at its finest, but not too heavy. Very filling.

Eclectic Vegetable Curry I honestly don’t remember this dish.

Tofu with Spinach and Chickpeas  This was a nice dish with good flavors.

Lime Tofu Fusion I did not like this but my husband did so I suppose it’s a matter of personal preference.  I preferred the lightness of the tofu in the sesame tofu dish.

“Chicken” Enchiladas w/ Vegetables This tasted OK but the presentation was awful. It was like a sheet of “cheese” on top and then just crumbles.  It would be better if the tortilla was wrapped around the filling and maybe try shredded cheese.

Chili Beans and “Chicken” This dish was exactly as I expected it to be. It was good.

Coriander Courgettes This was good but did not look anything like the picture on the website.  Because of its name, I was hoping for more zucchini. It felt a bit light in that department. I also thought the rice was a little too crunchy.

Sweet Moroccan Fusion This is a nice dish with good spices.

Thai Vermicelli I enjoyed this, but ate it with the Kung Pao chicken (2 of us). I don’t think I would enjoy eating just the noodles because that’s pretty much all there was. They had nice flavor but I would have liked there to be more veggies or some protein.

DESSERTS

Chocolate Chip Cookie These are my absolute favorite. You cannot tell they are vegan and the convenience cannot be beat.

Snickerdoodle Cookie Again, the cookies are awesome, hands down. Can’t believe they’re vegan.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar  bar is good.  Soft, but still retains form.  Lighter than peanut butter, but with all the flavor.  Chocolate chips are good and offer a nice texture contrast.

Sweet Carrot and Coconut Scramble Unique dessert. I enjoyed it.

Peanut Butter Cookie Crispy, “buttery” and delicious. Loved it. These are dangerous.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Again, the cookies are awesome, hands down. Can’t believe they’re vegan.

OVERALL

How would you rate your Gobble Green experience with 5 being the best and 1 being the worst?

4

Would you order from Gobble Green regularly based on this experience? If no, please explain why.

Yes! This was a great treat to have 2 weeks worth of meals. I will order again in the future.

Please write any additional feedback you have here to help us better improve the Gobble Green experience for customers.

Thank you for selecting me to “try” your meals. It was a great experience and you really offer a great product. Certain dishes were definitely “better” than others but overall I was impressed with the quality of the food.

Veg Out for Earth Day

Veg Out for Earth Day

By Arlette Yousif

Earth Day is fast approaching and there is no better way to celebrate than to go vegan.

Earth Day was founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. Nelson’s impetus for founding Earth Day was the welfare of animals coupled with his concern over air and water pollution. So how does a vegan lifestyle contribute to what Nelson set out to do? Let’s discuss!

Animal rights were on the agenda of the first Earth Day back in 1970 and continue to be at the heart of this annual observation.

Vegans certainly care about the welfare of animals. For most vegans, animal welfare is their predominant motivation for not eating meat. A vegan lifestyle leads to fewer overall meat purchases at the grocery store, which leads to less demand for animal agriculture and ultimately results in less animals being slaughtered. It’s simple supply and demand.

Air and water pollution are also issues which must also be acknowledged. There are still many people who do not believe global warming is real. It is very real and the main causes of the pollution of our atmosphere by carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions come from our vehicles and animal agriculture. Of course we should use alternate fuels like vegetable oil for our vehicles to reduce these harmful emissions, but we can also start smaller by planting a garden, by supporting the responsible agriculture of others by purchasing organic produce, and by choosing plant based foods for our dinner plates. These choices you can make on a daily basis do the Earth a great deal of good. Going green is just another way to say NO to pesticides, NO to animal testing, and NO to unnecessary and unhealthy ingredients in our foods.

April 22nd marks Earth Day, but why not love the Earth year-round with a vegan lifestyle? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

From the Gobble Green Archives:

The Water Crisis and How Vegans Help

One of Jon Stewart’s guests on The Daily Show wasn’t laughing. Robert Glennon, a professor of law and public policy at The University of Arizona and the author of Unquenchable (http://www.amazon.com/Unquenchable-Americas-Water-Crisis-About/dp/1597264369), used his moment on national television to stress the severity of the global water crisis. Although it is difficult for many of us living in the United States, Canada, and the UK to imagine fresh water as a finite resource, the water crisis is already a stark reality for people living in developing nations. Did you know that taking a five-minute shower uses more water than a person living in a developing country slum uses in a whole day? Currently, more than 3.5 million people die each year from water related diseases and young children account for 88% of these deaths.

This ad by UNICEF publicizes that bad water kills more children than war.

Many people cannot comprehend how a water crisis exists when approximately 70% of the earth is covered by ocean. The answer lies in the fact that less than 1% of the world’s water is fresh, safe, and ready for human use. While clean tech companies like Porifera (http://www.poriferanano.com/) and Aquaporin (http://www.aquaporin.dk/) are working towards developing technology to make the desalination process more energy and cost efficient, these applications are not yet ready for mass use and distilling ocean salt water to solve the crisis expediently is not a viable option.

Desalination technology is not an immediate solution for the global water crisis.

The water crisis is beginning to noticeably impact first world nations and, according to Robert Glennon and other preeminent researchers, water conservation is the best way to aid drought ridden areas like California, Arizona, and Nevada. While you can start saving water by making small changes, like running the garbage disposal less frequently and installing efficient showerheads, one of the best ways to conserve water is by adopting a vegan diet. Vegans’ contribution to water conservation is best explained in Peter H. Gleick’s Scientific American article entitled Making Every Drop Count. Gleick writes:

“Growing a pound of corn can take between 100 and 250 gallons

of water, depending on soil and climate conditions and irrigation

methods. But growing the grain to produce a pound of beef can

require between 2,000 and 8,500 gallons. We can conserve water not

only by altering how we choose to grow our food but also by changing

what we choose to eat.”

For more information about how a vegan diet saves water, please visit www.waterfootprint.org. This website offers a quick calculator feature that you can use to figure out your annual water footprint. You will be amazed at the difference between a vegan’s water footprint and an omnivore’s water footprint!

BED YOGA: The Best Way to Feel Guiltless About Hitting the Snooze Button

BED YOGA:
The Best Way to Feel Guiltless About Hitting the Snooze Button

In honor of recent holidays representing renewal and rebirth, explore a way to rise out of bed with joy and peace.

So, you’re in bed. You want to stay there. But that nagging voice in your head says you should get up and do something productive even though your body longs to remain in between the sheets. Here’s the perfect answer to this difficult dilemma: stay put and get moving.

Slowly moving, that is.

Though many American Yoga classes are focused on sweating through your clothes and revving up your heart rate, more traditional yoga is centered around relaxing the body, opening tight areas, breathing, and calming the mind. Some of the best yoga classes that I have attended have allowed the students to relax on their back for up to 70% of the time. One teacher even said quite delightedly at the beginning of his Relax Deeply Yoga class, ” Who is ready for their nap?!” (Sound like your kind of fitness? Check out Aaron Reed’s and Eric Schiffman’s classes at Exhale Mind Body Spa in Venice.)

In order for your bed yoga time to really be of benefit, set a goal: to spend twenty, thirty, or even 180 minutes in a moving meditation. You will not only clear your mind but you will also relieve your body of tension and perhaps even find yourself happily, albeit slowly, getting out of bed.

So….how do you do bed yoga?

Start by laying on your back with your hands on your belly. Take notice of your breathing and start to breathe through your nose. Make the breaths long and deep.

Before trying the several poses listed below, I want to stress the point of just DOING WHAT FEELS GOOD. If you listen to your body and move the way it wants to move, you will be experiencing the best and most beneficial Self Yoga Practice possible.

Start on your back and move your hands, wrists, feet, and ankles in small circles in one direction and then the other. Then make circles with your knees by hugging them into your chest.

From here, try gently twisting the body by dropping the knees to the left and then the right. Be aware that the right side is known in Ayurvedic practices as the masculine side representing strength, power, fire, and the sun energy while the left side is the feminine side which symbolizes healing, rest, peace, and the moon energy. Allow each side to cultivate these feelings as you go through your poses.

Move into Happy Baby (or, as some people unfortunately call it, the Dead Bug pose). Feel your spine reaching through your tail bone and onto the bed as you grab a hold of the outsides of your feet, ankles or shins with knees bent. Rock gently from side to side to massage the back and feel the hips open as you breathe into that belly space.

Plow Pose

Next, you can lengthen the legs into the air one at a time, clasping the hands behind the thigh or calf for a deep stretch. You can lift both legs into the air and bring the feet behind the head for a gentle Plow Pose. You can even lift the feet up into the air by lifting the tailbone off the mattress to wake up your core and bring some fire and strength into the belly.

Cat Pose

Cow Pose

If you are feeling a little more juiced up now, hug the knees into the chest and enjoy rocking and rolling a few times until you come up and over onto your hands and knees. Continuing with that deep breath, move from Cat Pose to Cow Pose and back again several times by lifting and tucking the tail bone.

When I teach classes, I love to encourage my students to start to move more freely by circling the head, shoulders, and hips into circles and figure eights. Imagine that you are hunting for tight spots in your body and when you find them stay with them for a while. Just as a good masseuse finds a knot and spends time kneading it out, you are doing the same by stretching and breathing space into the tight areas of the body.

Child's Pose

When you feel ready, move into a nice deep Child’s Pose by keeping the knees wide apart and the big toes touching as you relax down onto your heels. If you are an experienced yogi, you can continue into Upward and Downward Dogs or even Warriors (just don’t bump your head on the ceiling!). Or, if you want to continue to rejuvenate, a shoulder stand for three minutes is one of the best ways to start or finish a day. Shoulder stand is known as the most healing of yoga poses, as it allows the body to be in a full inversion without any strain or stress.

Corpse Pose

To conclude bed yoga, as we do with all yoga practices, finish with Savassanah, or Corpse Pose.

These movements all work just as well if you are having trouble staying IN bed. Insomnia, restlessness, and that ever nagging “monkey mind,” can be relieved with a few yoga poses and deep breaths.

Don’t forget that one lovely thing about being in bed is that you are surrounded by pillows; use them! Put a pillow under your knees with your legs outstretched in order to relieve the lower back. You can also place a pillow vertically under the length of the spine for gentle shoulder and heart opening as you lay still. Breathe in the morning and feel refreshed and ready for the day. Or breathe in the evening and let your body slip into peace and stillness.

One of the most challenging things about yoga is starting it on one’s own. Just rolling out your mat and beginning the practice can be the biggest mental hurdle to overcome. With Bed Yoga, you are already there. So just move and do what feels good. Every living thing needs time and space to rejuvenate, reboot, and rebuild.

I often imagine what this world would be like if the majority of people, including leaders, presidents, and CEOs, woke up in the morning and took 15 minutes to move freely and breathe deeply. I think this world would be a much happier and more peaceful place, so thank you for doing your part by enjoying your bed.

GOBBLE GREEN PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE METABOLISM BOOSTER KIT

The Metabolism Booster Kit

6 Low-Calorie, Healthy Meals per Day Coupled With Fitness Guidance

Gobble Green proudly presents The Metabolism Booster Kit! Do you want to promote weight loss, feel less hungry throughout the day and improve metabolic function? Give your body the boost it needs with this six day kit designed to curve hunger cravings and get you back on track with a healthy diet and easy to follow fitness guide. Here are the top four reasons why eating 6 small meals throughout the day works well for many dieters.

1. Eating 6 meals spread out over every 2-3 hours prevents overeating.

2. Eating more meals with smaller portions has also been shown to decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease.

3. Eating more frequently has been shown to boost your metabolism, thereby burning more calories.

4. Eating smaller portions has been shown to better control blood sugar levels, helping you to maintain energy levels.

Gobble Green’s Metabolism Booster Kit is vegan, gluten-free, and keeps your daily caloric intake under 1500 calories per day. We take the hard work out of your daily dieting! Follow the below meal plan and start seeing results.

To help you achieve maximum benefits, Gobble Green’s Metabolism Booster Kit includes six days of fitness training guidance to match your six days on the meal plan. When you purchase this kit, you will be sent a questionnaire via email which our staff will evaluate to determine the appropriate fitness guide for your personal needs. You will receive your work-out instructions via email to correspond with your meal delivery.

We specifically designed this kit to last for six and not seven days. We find that more people stick to diets when they don’t feel deprived, so take the seventh day off and splurge a little…just not in excess. It works for Jessica Biel and Hugh Jackman, so why not you? Stick to the plan for six days out of your week and have a little fun on the seventh day: see the results you want without feeling deprived. Healthy eating is a lifestyle choice, so we’ve created a plan that’s simple for you to stick with long term.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR HAVING A HAPPY VEGAN EASTER

Wooden eggs are a fabulous vegan substitute for Easter decorating that last longer than the real deal!

Egg Decorating Alternatives

As vegans, the use of eggs for decorating purposes over the Easter holiday is unappealing. Fortunately, you can still enjoy bonding with family and friends during the Easter holiday without partaking in the cruelty and waste associated with egg production and consumption. Try substituting other art projects like painting wooden or plastic eggs rather than the real deal. Your artistic creations will last longer so that you can remember your Easter holiday experience all year round!
